"If pain persists more than 4-8 weeks, and does not resolve on its own with over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen and some adjustments to daily activities, often there is a more serious cause that needs to be worked up by a pain and spine specialist."

In cases of severe pain that is not alleviated by over-the-counter treatments, it is necessary to see a specialist," advises Dr. Kroopf.
