FAQs

Here are answers to some common questions.

  • What is interventional pain management?

Interventional pain management is a specialized medical field that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain conditions using minimally invasive techniques such as injections, nerve blocks, and other procedures to alleviate pain and improve quality of life.

  • What conditions can be treated with interventional pain management?

Interventional pain management can effectively treat a variety of chronic pain conditions including but not limited to:

    • Back pain (e.g., sciatica, herniated discs)
    • Neck pain
    • Arthritis pain
    • Nerve pain (e.g., neuropathy)
    • Joint pain (e.g., osteoarthritis)
    • Headaches
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
    • Cancer pain
  • How Do I Know If My Pain is Acute or Chronic?

Acute pain is a normal physiological response to injury--think of the swelling and pain you experience when you hit your thumb with a hammer.  Acute pain arises quickly, is very intense, and subsides completely in a short time period after the original injury is healed. It is unusual for acute pain to last more than three months.

If acute pain isn’t properly treated or early enough, it can develop into chronic pain --pain that persists for longer than three months.

Chronic pain occurs when pain signals in the central nervous system (spinal cord and brain) continue firing after the original injury is healed. It is an abnormal response of the nervous system and if not properly addressed can have devastating consequences.

  • When Should I Seek Treatment from a Pain Specialist?

In some cases, treatment with a specialist is necessary at the onset of pain. Pain that lasts longer than 6-8 weeks, and any pain that has not be properly diagnosed by a general healthcare provider should be evaluated by a Pain Specialist. Our specialization is early intervention and prevention of chronic pain so we prefer to see patients as soon as possible. Ignoring persistent pain can cause it to get worse, and may cause long term effects that cannot be easily remedied.
